April 05: Kurt Cobain died in 1994 – Nirvana’s 10 best songs

Kurt Cobain died in 1994, (April 5) he is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Nirvana. Kurt Cobain formed Nirvana with Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington in 1985 and established it as part of the Seattle music scene, having its debut album Bleach released on the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. After signing with major label DGC Records, the band found breakthrough success with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from its second album Nevermind (1991). Following the success of Nevermind, Nirvana was labeled “the flagship band” of Generation X, and Cobain hailed as “the spokesman of a generation”

During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with heroin addiction, illness and depression. He had difficulty coping with his fame and public image, and the professional and lifelong personal pressures surrounding himself and his wife, musician Courtney Love. On April 8, 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle, the victim of a suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

Since their debut, Nirvana, with Cobain as a songwriter, has sold over 25 million albums in the U.S., and over 50 million worldwide.

Bruce Springsteen played a great show in San Jose in 2008 :

This concert was part of the third leg of “Magic Tour”. Bruce & The E streeter’s was closing top form.. The first two legs in 2007 might have been a bit dissapointing, but on the last three legs we got many fantastic concerts.

The San Jose concert is one of the best I’ve heard from “Magic Tour”, and the sound quality is superb. (Worth a google 🙂

The video clips I’ve found from this concert is of poor quality,  but here is an audio of “Something in the night”:

Jack Henderson Clement (April 5, 1931 – August 8, 2013) was an American singersongwriter, and a record and film producer.Raised and educated in Memphis, Jack Clement was performing at an early age. In 1953, he made his first record for the Sheratonlabel in Boston, Massachusetts but did not immediately pursue a full time career in music, instead choosing to study at Memphis State University from 1953 to 1955. Nicknamed ‘Cowboy’ Jack Clement, during his student days he played steel guitar with a local band, and in 1956 became part of one of the seminal events in rock and roll history when he went to work as a producer and engineer for Sam Phillips at Sun Records. There, Clement worked with future stars such as Roy OrbisonCarl Perkins and Johnny Cash. But most importantly, he discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis while Sam Phillips was away on a trip to Florida (one of those recordings, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” was selected in 2005 for permanent preservation in the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress).

Michael David McCready (born April 5, 1966) is an American musician who serves as the lead guitarist for the American rock band Pearl Jam. Along with Jeff AmentStone GossardDave Krusen, and Eddie Vedder, he is one of the founding members of Pearl Jam. McCready was also a member of the side project bands Temple of the DogMad Season and The Rockfords.

Dave Swarbrick (born 5 April 1941) is an English folk musician and singer-songwriter. He has been described by Ashley Hutchings as ‘the most influential [British] fiddle player bar none’ and his style has been copied or developed by almost every British, and many World folk violin players that have followed him.

He was one of the most highly regarded musicians produced by the second British folk revival, contributing to some of the most important groups and projects of the 1960s, he became a much sought after session musician, which has led him throughout his career to work with many of the major figures in folk and folk rock music. His work for the group Fairport Convention from 1969 is usually credited with leading them to produce their seminal album Liege and Lief (1969) which initiated the electric folk movement.

  1. Your Dave Swarbrick tribute is appreciated – if you have time, check out his rendition of ‘To Althea From Prison’ (words by Richard Lovelace) on Fairport’s ‘Nine’ LP.
