Today: Bobbie Gentry is 68

From Wikipedia:

Roberta Lee Streeter (born July 27, 1944), professionally known as Bobbie Gentry, is an American former singer-songwriter notable as one of the first female country artists to compose and produce her own material. Her songs typically drew on her Mississippi roots to compose vignettes of the Southern United States.

Gentry shot to international fame with her intriguing Southern Gothic narrative “Ode to Billie Joe” in 1967. The track was fourth in the Billboard year-end chart of 1967 and earned her Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1968. Gentry charted eleven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and four singles on the United Kingdom Top 40.  Her album Fancy brought her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. After her first albums, she had a successful run of variety shows on the Las Vegas Strip. She lost interest in performing in the late 1970s and has since lived privately in Los Angeles.

From Allmusic (Jason Alkeny):

Bobbie Gentry remains one of the most interesting and underappreciated artists to emerge out of Nashville during the late ’60s. Best-known for her crossover smash “Ode to Billie Joe,” she was one of the first female country artists to write and produce much of her own material, forging an idiosyncratic, pop-inspired sound that, in tandem with her glamorous, bombshell image, anticipated the rise of latter-day superstars like Shania Twain and Faith Hill.

Bruce Springsteen concert Bergen – Day2

Here are my votes from the second Bergen concert:

[ws_table id=”18″]

Hallgeir will update the post later with his comments & pictures.

Me @ the concert taking notes…. while securing my beer 🙂

Here is a report from the other half of JV (Hallgeir).

Top 10 songs Bergen day 2:

1. Racing in the Street
2. Youngstown
3. Badlands
4. Born to run
5. Murder Incorporated
6. Rosalita
7. Long Walk Home
8. Johnny 99
9. Out in the streets
10. My City of Ruins

and while I’m at it, here are my top ten from Oslo:

1. The Promise
2. The Promised Land
3. My City of Ruins
4. Streets of Fire
5. The River
6. Johnny 99
7. The Rising
8. Born to Run
9. Born in the USA
10. Two Hearts

The Oslo and Bergen shows were great and very unique and different experiences, and it’s hard to pick a favorite. The first night in Bergen may have been the most loose and fun show, Bergen the second night may have been the best musically and with the most exciting selections of songs, and Oslo may have been the best over all concert with a little bit of everything. I think the audience was better in Bergen, both those concerts was more geared towards a rock’n roll party than the soul revue in Oslo (at least that was what I felt).

The Oslo show didn’t feel longer than Bergen night two even if it was extremely long.

If I was forced to pick a favourite it would be Bergen the second night, but with Oslo and Bergen the first night very close. Thea (my twelve year old daughter) saw her first Springsteen concert in Oslo and that was a great experience, just watching my daughter experiencing Bruce for the first time and remembering the feeling from my first show, great feeling!

Bruce Springsteen summer 2012 concerts – Playlist

Based on setlists from all “Wrecking Ball Tour” shows, and considering the latest trends, I’ve put up a list of songs and their estimated probability to get played in the coming concerts. I’ve also created a spotify playlist.

This is off course estimates and Bruce alters his setlist for every concert. But some songs have been played in every concert this tour thus far, and many have gotten relative many plays. My aim is to hit over 80% on the 2 coming show in Bergen, Norway (July 23/24).

  • I will limit my playlist to 35 songs, and the list might change on every update.
  • playlist expanded to include 46 songs – on july 20
  • playlist expanded to include 47 songs – on july 22
  • I will update after each show

Check JV’s posts about the concerts in Bergen:

Bergen Concert 1 – July 23

Bergen Concert 2 – July 24

Update12 – July 26

Numbers not updated… only setlist score. Bergen concerts were my goal. No updates will follow. We have to focus on the upcoming “øyafestivalen” in Oslo in 1,5 weeks 🙂 Both JV’s will attend all 4 days.

  • July 23 / Bergenhus Festning-Koengen / Bergen, NORWAY
  • 29 Songs
  • Setlist/playlist score – 21/29 – ~72%

Today: Charlie Rich passed away in 1995 – 17 years ago

From Wikipedia:

Charles (Charlie) Rich (December 14, 1932 – July 25, 1995) was an American country music singer and musician. A Grammy Award winner, his eclectic-style of music was often hard to classify in a single genre, playing in the rockabilly, jazz, blues, country, and gospel genres.

In the latter part of his life, Rich acquired the nickname The Silver Fox. He is perhaps best remembered for a pair of 1973 hits, “Behind Closed Doors” and “The Most Beautiful Girl“. “The Most Beautiful Girl” topped the U.S. country singles charts, as well as the pop singles charts.

From Allmusic (Stephen Thoma Erlewine):

Charlie Rich was simultaneously one of the most critically acclaimed and most erratic country singers of post-World War II era. Rich had all the elements of being one of the great country stars of the ’60s and ’70s, but his popularity never matched his critical notices. What made him a critical favorite also kept him from mass success. Throughout his career, Rich willfully bended genres, fusing country, jazz, blues, gospel, rockabilly, and soul. Though he had 45 country hits in a career that spanned nearly four decades, he became best-known for his lush, Billy Sherrill-produced countrypolitan records of the early ’70s. Instead of embracing the stardom those records brought him, Rich shunned it, retreating into semiretirement by the ’80s.

Bruce Springsteen – Bergen Show1 – July 23

Fantastic Bruce show… as expected.

But I have a very strong feeling that tonight’s show will be even better (and longer)….

Here are my “votes”:

Hallgeir will update this post with his comments & some pictures tomorrow.

-Egil

Well, so how do I do this?

Bruce Springsteen concerts are something else, always good, often great. The concert was a 6 out of 6, but it was very “showy” and vey 80’s oriented, nothing wrong with that, but I miss a few songs…

The show was fantastic (as expected) and very Born in the USA bent (7 songs!) Bruce flirted with the audience, it was a great show for the casual fan. Actually it was a great show for any one, Bruce and the band were in great form

My top 10 songs of the evening:

1. Thunder Road
2. Promised LAnd
3. For You (Egil clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about ;))
4. Because the night
5. Born to Run
6. Badlands
7. The River
8. Atlantic City
9. Spirit in the night
10. Born in the USA (what an Anthem this is!)
