October 1: Bob Dylan Cocaine Blues, Bournemouth, England 1997 (Video)

Redirecting to a newer version of this post….

Every time my baby and me we go uptown,
Police come in and knock me down.
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, better come here quick,
This old cocaine is ‘bout to make me sick.
Cocaine all around my brain.

Bournemouth International Centre
Bournemouth, England
1 October 1997

Musicians:

  • Bob Dylan (vocal & guitar)
  • Tony Garnier (bass)

Yonder come my baby, she’s dressed in red,
She’s got a shot-gun,
Says she’s gonna kill me dead.
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, better come here quick,
This old cocaine ‘bout to make me sick.
Cocaine all around my brain.
(Instrumental Bridge #1)

You take Sally, an’ I’ll take Sue,
Ain’t nah difference between the two.
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, you better come here quick,
This old cocaine ‘bout to make me sick.
Cocaine all around my brain.
(Instrumental Bridge #2)
Cocaine’s for horses and it’s not for men,
Doctor said it kill you, but he didn’t say when.
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, you better come here quick,
This old cocaine ‘bout to make me sick.
Cocaine all around my brain.

Hey baby, you better come here quick,
This old cocaine ‘bout to make me sick.
Cocaine all around my brain.

  1. This is the kind of stuff I want to see when I go to a Dylan concert, not Sinatra covers. So glad I haven’t forked out megaeuros to go see him in Amsterdam this year.
At last a truthful comment from Steinar Daler on the boblinks review page about his opening night in Oslo.

  2. This was his first full concert after the illness with histoplasmosis which caused him to cancel a tour due to start in Cork, Ireland a few months previously.

(He had however played a very short set just a few days previously in Bologna, Italy at which Pope John Paul II was present.)

  3. I am listening to the version on the Live At The Gaslight album , great one too. Did he wrote it ?

    1. Cocaine / Cocaine Blues (Traditional arranged Rev. Gary Davis)

Dave Van Ronk probably does the definitive version of this song, but Dylan may well have
based his rendition on Ramblin’ Jack Elliott’s 1958 recording which was released on his
Topic album “Jack Takes The Floor”. In his spoken introduction to the song Jack informs
the listener that he learned the song from Reverend Gary Davis.
