The first night’s semi-acoustic set features two requests from the eighth row. The first is “Tomorrow Is a Long Time,” shouted out as Dylan is about to start “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.” Dylan surprisingly responds, “It sure is. Awfully long,” and proceeds to unearth a lovely, subdued version. Two songs later, the same misfit asks for “John Brown,” and Dylan duly obliges with his most mannered rendition.

When I was 17, I went to all three shows of this residency (6th and 7th too) and they were all spectacular. Dylan is engaging throughout, taking requests (“Tomorrow is a Long Time!”) and inviting the audience to come closer (before One Too Many Mornings). I’ve been to some 40-odd shows and I think these were probably the best of the lot of them. Looking back on it now and knowing/seeing how taciturn Bob is, I love this rare, rather ebullient performance even more. I actually bought the VHS tape of this show in late ’90 from the bootlegger himself in Toronto, He used to sell his stuff on a fold-up table on Yonge St. He declared this very concert to be the best concert-video he’d ever shot.
As an aside, the next night (June 6th) I heard “I’ve Been All Around This World” for the first time. Blew my mind. Took me *10 years* to find a recording of that. Totally worth it.
p.s. I’ve never been able to find a recording of the June 7th show to complete the trilogy. If anyone happens to read this post and has it, I will happily trade you good karma for it!
