Bob Dylan: 5 Great Live Versions of “Not Dark Yet” (Videos)

Shadows are falling and I’ve been here all day
It’s too hot to sleep, time is running away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I’ve still got the scars that the sun didn’t heal
There’s not even room enough to be anywhere
It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there

Some facts:

  • Dylan has played “Not Dark Yet” 152 times live
  • First time was @ Columbus Civic Center, Columbus, Georgia – 30 October 1997
  • Last performance: Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Connecticut – 8 September 2012
  • Peak year: 1999 with 57 renditions

July 13: Watch Bob Dylan @ Stirling Castle, Scotland 2001 – Great Concert

bob dylan 2001

Would you spend the night of Friday the 13th in a huge medieval castle? The folks that chose to do so on this cold, rainy evening, found it to be one of the luckiest days of their lives. Dylan is in top form, and the show is another near perfect performance in a string of many along this tour.

May 11: Bob Dylan’s best songs: “Lonesome Day Blues” recorded in 2001

I overwrite. If I know I am going in to record a song, I write more than I need. In the past that’s been a problem because I failed to use discretion at times. I have to guard against that. On this album, “Lonesome Day Blues” was twice as long at one point.

@ #152 on my list of Dylan’s 200 best songs.. comes this hard, tough & tight electric blues.

The master version (Love and Theft version) was recorded @ Sony Music Studios – New York City – May 11, 2001 (according to Clinton Heylin –  Still on the Road: The Songs of Bob Dylan, 1974-2006).
Few session details are available.

March 18: Bob Dylan @ Perth Entertainment Center, Australia in 2001 (audio)

Highlights: Bob’s harp playing, improved out of sight since last tour’s tentative efforts. The Wicked Messenger – absolutely searing rendition, I thought Patti’s version was good, but this took it to another level.
Standing in the Doorway, one of my absolute favourites,
starts beautifully and would have been a highlight, but lost it’s way lyrically – oh well! maybe next time. Watchtower and Hwy61 – simply smokin’ Desolation Row and Visions in the one show!
