Watch Bob Dylan’s performance for Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday (video)

Once upon a time
A girl with moonlight in her eyes
Put her hand in mine
And said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time
Very long ago

Bob Dylan’s performance was filmed Oct. 28 at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, Alabama.

Aired Tuesday night (Dec 20, 2016) on the NBC special, “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet to Come”?

Once upon a hill
We sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time
Now the tree is gone

How the breeze ruffled through her hair
How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn’t there
We were young and didn’t have a care
Where did it go

Once upon a time
The world was sweeter than we knew
Everything was ours
How happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time
Never comes again

  1. Obviously, Bob does not attempt the brilliant crescendo that Tony Bennett usually finishes this song with but so much about this is good, the timing and delivery, it seems that only with the standards will Bob ever sing a song “straight” instead of never doing a song the same way twice which gets annoying sometimes and only encourages the Dylan can’t sing” brigade.

  2. Although I wished that he would dare to do to these songs what he was used to, give them a melodic twist and torpedo it with his own words, I cannot help but be touched by his beautiful singing, he makes it his own still…
