10 Great Songs by Irish Artists

As with most musicoholics I need to create playlists associated with upcoming travel destinations. It is a mandatory part of the planning process.
I will travel to Dublin tomorrow and hence a playlist is created. Here are videos of 10 great songs from the list & the spotify playlist embedded.

Only one song from each artist

Van Morrison – Cyprus Avenue, 9/23/1970 – Fillmore East, New York, NY

Well, I’m caught one more time
Up on Cyprus Avenue
Caught one more time
Up on Cyprus Avenue

And I’m conquered in a car seat
Not a thing that I can do
I may go crazy
Before that mansion on the hill

U2 – New Year’s Day

Yeah
All is quiet on New Year’s Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you, night and day
Nothing changes on New Year’s Day
On New Year’s Day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

The Pogues – Sally MacLennane

Well Jimmy played harmonica in the pub where I was born
He played it from the night time to the peaceful early morn
He soothed the souls of psychos and the men who had the horn
And they all looked very happy in the morning

Now Jimmy didn’t like his place in this world of ours
Where the elephant man broke strong men’s necks
When he’d had too many powers
So sad to see the grieving of the people that he’s leaving
And he took the road for god knows in the morning

The Waterboys – The Whole Of The Moon

I pictured a rainbow
You held in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw then plan
I wondered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon!
The whole of the moon!

My Bloody Valentine – Only Shallow

Sleep
Like a pillow
Down(ward)
And
(Where)
She won’t care
Anyway (where)

Stiff Little Fingers – Alternative Ulster (Rockpalast ’80)

Seven more hours in Belfast
The pound so old it’s a pity
Okay, there’s the Trident in Bangor
And then you walk back to the city

We ain’t got nothin’ but they don’t really care
They don’t even know you know
They just want money
We can take it or leave it
What we need

Is an alternative ulster
Grab it, change it, it’s yours
Get an alternative ulster
Ignore the bores and their laws

Thin Lizzy – The Boys Are Back In Town (1976 UK T.O.T.P. TV Appearance)

Guess who just got back today?
Those wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven’t changed, haven’t much to say
But man, I still think those cats are great

They were asking if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
I told them you were living downtown
Driving all the old men crazy

The boys are back in town

The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem – Mountain Dew

Let grasses and waters flow in a free and easy way,
But give me enough of the rare old stuff that’s brewed near Galway Bay,
Come policemen all from Donegal,Sligo and Leitrim too,
Oh, we’ll give them the slip and we’ll take a sip
Of the rare old Mountain Dew

Chorus

Hi di-diddly-idle-um, diddly-doodle-idle-um,diddly-doo-ri-diddlum-deh
Hi di-diddly-idle-um, diddly-doodle-idle-um,diddly-doo-ri-diddlum-deh

The Undertones – Teenage Kicks

Are teenage dreams so hard to beat
Everytime she walks down the street
Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good

I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night

The Dubliners – Whiskey in the jar

As I was a goin’ over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced my pistol and I then produced my rapier
Saying “Stand and deliver” for he were a bold deceiver

Chorus:
Mush-a ring dum-a do dum-a da
Wack fall the daddy-o, wack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar

I counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy

(Chorus)

I went up to my chamber, all for to take a slumber
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure ‘t was no wonder
But Jenny drew me charges and she filled them up with water
Then sent for captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter

(Chorus)

’twas early in the morning, just before I rose to travel
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrell
I first produced me pistol for she stole away me rapier
But I couldn’t shoot the water, so a prisoner I was taken

(Chorus)

Now there’s some take delight in the carriages a rolling
and others take delight in the hurling and the bowling
but I take delight in the juice of the barley
and courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early

(Chorus)

If anyone can aid me ‘t is my brother in the army
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney
And if he’ll go with me, we’ll go rovin’ in Kilkenny
And I’m sure he’ll treat me better than my own a-sporting Jenny

A spotify playlist – GREAT Irish Music
