Bob Dylan Sings Neil Young’s Old Man (3 versions)

Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there’s so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Bob Dylan played “Old Man” 33 times on his 2002 tour, and here are 2 of them:

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don’t get lost.
Like a coin that won’t get tossed
Rolling home to you.

21 November 2002:

Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn’t mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I’ve been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I’m all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.

Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.

  1. Psalm 37:25. “I have been young, now and I am old.” Being one of the few remaining members of the Class of the folk revolution of the 1960s, a friend of Bobby’s and Suze Rotolo, Dave Van Van Ronk and Terri Thal and many more mentioned in my book This Singin’ thing, I submit this song as testament. It’s a concept that was as foreign as Sanskrit to us back then but now we all have one thing in common that the young do not know. We know what it’s like to grow old but we remember what it was like to be young. Neil’s song is an interesting reversal of age It’s a great song but it never asks the “Old Man: “How’s it going for you old fella’?” My song favors the concept that the young can learn much from the older generations and we can share with them realities of the inexorable march through time. Happy birthday Neil.
