In 1969 I met Allen Ginsberg. He was “performing” his poetry at a Minneapolis Board of Education sponsored reading. His lover, Orlovsky, also performed, playing bongo drums to Allen’s cadence. After the “performance,” I accompanied Allen as he hobbled on crutches (he had broken his leg) to the Hillel Center. All of this took place on the University of Minnesota campus. I was a senior in high school and I tagged along to a reception sponsored and attended by Board of Education types where Allen smoked hash in a pipe which he frequently passed to me. I smoked from it and, in turn, passed it along to the Board of Education associated crowd. In this Allen took great mischievous delight even to the point of having me go the refrigerator for numerous bottles of Budweiser beer for him.
