Two years later, back in the studios in London on July 27–28, 1986 for a Dylan session intended to provide fresh material for his ill-advised film Hearts of Fire—material that Dylan had signally failed to compose—the musicians assembled behind him included Clapton on guitar, RON WOOD on bass and guitar and several others. They managed to get through some takes of John Hyatt’s song ‘The Usual’, a ‘Ride This Train’, some stabs at Dylan’s anyone-could-havewritten- this-song ‘Had a Dream About You Baby’, some of Billy Joe Shaver’s ‘Old Five & Dimers Like Me’, a ‘To Fall in Love’, a ‘Night After Night’ and a pleasant cut of Shel Silverstein and Dennis Locorriere’s ‘A Couple More Years’. Several of these made it onto the soundtrack album, several made it into the film, one made it onto Down in the Groove and one further cut even made it onto the Argentine Down in the Groove release. ~Michael Gray (The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia: Revised and Updated Edition) |

In 1987, Columbia released the soundtrack to the film. Dylan was apparently originally contracted to write and contribute four new original recordings to the album, but would only turn in two original songs and one cover tune. The tracks included a cover of John Hiatt’s “The Usual,” along with the Dylan originals “Night After Night” and “Had a Dream About You Baby.” Dylan would later release an alternate version of “Had a Dream About You Baby” on the 1988 album Down in the Groove. ~Wikipedia |

I always really liked Night After Night, not the usual Bob song but still great!
Terrible movie–perhaps the worst in Dylan’s filmography. Nothing to commend it, except for some unintentional laughs. But Bob’s performance of “The Usual” is one of the true highlights of his ’80’s output–terrific song and impassioned delivery.
Yes, I agree with you guys…to sustain a legend sometimes requires being buried in rubbish!
Brings back memories of being an extra in the Hearts of Fire concert crowd scenes filmed at the old GE plant on Dupont in Toronto. It was thrilling…at first. After hours of takes, and long stretches of nothing (while we sat on bleachers) followed by segments in which we all had to ‘go nuts’ and applaud like mad, everyone iin the audience was exhausted. I can only assume same was true of film crew.
Thanks for sharing this great memory Lori B
