Bob Dylan: 5 Great live versions of Trying To Get To Heaven

bob dylan 2001

The air is getting hotter
There’s a rumbling in the skies
I’ve been wading through the high muddy water
With the heat rising in my eyes
Every day your memory grows dimmer
It doesn’t haunt me like it did before
I’ve been walking through the middle of nowhere
Trying to get to heaven before they close the door

A very strong song from the brilliant album “Time Out Of Mind” (1997).

Tryin’ To Get To Heaven has been performed 156 times live, top years were 2010 & 2011 with 19 performances each.

Bob Dylan: Tangled Up In Blue – Newcastle 1998

bob dylan newcastle 1998

Early one mornin’ the sun was shinin’
I was layin’ in bed
Wond’rin’ if she’d changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama’s homemade dress
Papa’s bankbook wasn’t big enough
And I was standin’ on the side of the road
Rain fallin’ on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I’ve paid some dues gettin’ through
Tangled up in blue

Steven Rings: Here’s Your Throat Back, Thanks for the Loan: On Dylan’s Voices (video)

steven rings bob dylan

“No, you know, you can do anything with your voice if you put your mind to it. I mean, you can become a ventriloquist or you can become an imitator of other people’s voices. I’m usually just stuck with my own voice. I can do a few other people’s voices.”
~Bob Dylan (to Ron Rosenbaum, Nov 1977)

This great talk by musicologist Steve Rings examines the characteristics of Bob Dylan’s voice over the course of 50 years or so of live performances.

It is divided into 3 parts:

  1. Dylan’s many voices
  2. “The nature” of Dylan’s Voice (more technical/philosophical)
  3. Methodological challenges for scholars analyzing Dylan’s voices
(& techniques that can be used)

Noah Gundersen and David Ramirez – Girl from the North Country (BobDylan)

Noah Gundersen (born May 31, 1989) is an American indie folk singer-songwriter from Seattle, Washington, and founder of the band The Courage. He also made one of the best albums in 2014, Ledges (we had it at number 16 at our year-end list).

David Ramirez is also a singer-songwriter (from Austin I think), Ramirez’s career has spanned 2 full lengths and 3 EP’s.

“I grew up on 90’s alternative radio. It was fun and easy. In college someone gave me a Ryan Adams record, which led me to discover folks like Bob Dylan.”
– David Ramirez

Noah Gundersen and David Ramirez perform Girl from the North Country live and in one-take for an upcoming release of SerialBoxTV. Filmed at the Fremont Abbey in Seattle, Washington:

So good!

Solomon Burke covers Bob Dylan

solomon burke

Even in the ‘60s, to use such a deplorable term really, you could turn on the radio and hear Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett or Percy Sledge or Solomon Burke. These people were making popular records. Well, that’s no more.
