3 fine cover versions: Dylan’s Man Gave Name To All The Animals

adam-naming-animals
Man Gave Names to All the Animals is a song written by Bob Dylan that appeared on Dylan’s 1979 album Slow Train Coming and was also released as a single in some European countries. It was also released as a promo single in US. The single became a chart hit in France and Belgium.

However, the song also has detractors who consider it the worst song Dylan ever wrote. A 2013 reader’s poll conducted by Rolling Stone Magazine ranked “Man Gave Names to All the Animals” the 4th worst Bob Dylan song, although the hit single from Slow Train Coming, “Gotta Serve Somebody” placed second. I love’em both.

Man Gave Names to All the Animals has been covered by multiple artists, I’ve picked three of my favourites.

10 Favorite Bob Dylan cover versions by Grateful Dead

grateful_dead_logo
Grateful Dead is a band that I’ve learned to love over the years, it has been a struggle. The reason for that is the not very good album collaboration with Bob Dylan (Dylan and The Dead, 1987). I bought it on casette and tried so hard to like it, but in my young and inexperienced ears this was all over the place and without energy.  I like the album better now, but it is not among my favorite Dylan albums.

More important, it was unfair to judge Grateful Dead because of that record. I love American Beauty and I love Workingman’s Dead, and I think there are a lot of great live recordings of the band. With Bob Dylan and without Bob Dylan.

I think they are very skilful Dylan interpreters and they have even released an album with Bob Dylan’s songs.

5 fine covers of Bob Dylan’s One Too Many Mornings

one too

Down the street the dogs are barking
And the day is a-getting dark
As the night comes in a-falling
The dogs will lose their bark
And the silent night will shatter
From the sounds inside my mind
For I’m one too many mornings
And a thousand miles behind

“One Too Many Mornings” is a song by Bob Dylan, released on his third studio album The Times They Are a-Changin’ in 1964. The chords and vocal melody are in some places very similar to the song “The Times They Are A-Changin'”.
