Here are 5 videos you absolutely need to see. They are chosen for their historical significance and/or blistering performances.

1. When The Ship Comes In, Only A Pawn In Their Game & Keep Your Eyes On The Prize (Len Chandler)

Lincoln Memorial,
Washington, District Of Columbia
28 August 1963
March On Washington (Washington Rights March)

Oh the time will come up
When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin’
Like the stillness in the wind
’Fore the hurricane begins
The hour when the ship comes in

Newport, Rhode Island
24 July 1964
Newport Folk Festival, afternoon workshop.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me

3. It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)

Town Hall
Birmingham, England
5 May 1965

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying

4. Maggie’s Farm

Freebody Park
Newport, Rhode Island
25 July 1965
Newport Folk Festival
Electric controversy

I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
No, I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more
Well, I wake in the morning
Fold my hands and pray for rain
I got a head full of ideas
That are drivin’ me insane
It’s a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor
I ain’t gonna work on Maggie’s farm no more

5. Ballad Of A Thin Man

(probably)
Odeon
Glasgow, Scotland
19 May 1966

You walk into the room
With your pencil in your hand
You see somebody naked
And you say, “Who is that man?”
You try so hard
But you don’t understand
Just what you’ll say
When you get home

Because something is happening here
But you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?

  1. The 1965 Newport Festival was held at Festival Field, off the Connell Highway north of Newport – not Freebody Park, which was much smaller and in the heart of Newport.

  2. Stunning performance, with great organ sound from Garth Hudson. Nice white Morris Minor saloon behind Dylan in the final frame..
