Four good and one GREAT versions of Bob Dylan’s Every Grain of Sand

That was an inspired song that came to me. I felt like I was just putting down words that were coming from somewhere else, and I just stuck it out.
~Bob Dylan (“Biograph” notes)

“That’s an excellent song, very painless song to write,… It took like 12 seconds – or that’s how it felt.”
~Bob Dylan (to Robert Hilburn – Feb 1992)

…But “Every Grain of Sand” is something special: the “Chimes of Freedom” and “Mr. Tambourine Man” of Bob Dylan’s Christian period. A pearl among swine, it has surety and strength all down the line. Also vulnerability.
~Paul Nelson (from his famous “Rolling Stone Magazine” review of “Shot Of Love” – Oct. 1981)

Every Grain of Sand is a beautiful song, one of Dylan’s finest. It was released on Shot of Love in 1981. An alternate take of this song was released in The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991. It appeared on the soundtrack for the 1997 film Another Day In Paradise. Bob Dylan included in his live repertoire many years. First we will present five cover versions and after that we should listen to 2 really great versions from Dylan himself.

Bob Dylan: Roll On John (Lennon)

JohnLennon-BobDylan
Captured in the documentary “Eat the Document”

Roll on, John, roll through the rain and snow
Take the right-hand road and go where the buffalo roam
They’ll trap you in an ambush before you know
Too late now to sail back home

Shine your light
Movin’ on
You burned so bright
Roll on, John
~Bob Dylan (Roll On John)

I dig John [Lennon]. As a writer, a singer and a Beatle. I dig everytime I meet them, but him I dig. He doesn’t take things seriously as so many guys do. I like that.
~Bob Dylan (KRLA Beat Interview, June 1965)

Oh, I always love to see John [Lennon]. Always. He’s a wonderful fellow… and I always like to see him.
~Bob Dylan (to Jann Wenner, Dec 1969)

Today Tom Waits turns 67.

Here are some great audio clips from “Theme Time Radio Hour” (hosted by Bob Dylan) where Tom Waits comments on different subjects.

Wikipedia:

Theme Time Radio Hour (TTRH) was a weekly, one-hour satellite radio show hosted by Bob Dylan originally airing from May 2006 to April 2009. Each episode was an eclectic, freeform mix of blues, folk, rockabilly, R&B, soul, bebop, rock-and-roll, country and pop music, centered on a theme such as “Weather,” “Money,” and “Flowers” with songs from artists as diverse as Patti Page and LL Cool J. Much of the material for the show’s 100 episodes was culled from producer Eddie Gorodetsky’s music collection, which reportedly includes more than 10,000 records and more than 140,000 digital files.

December 6: The 7th Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan recording session in 1962

bob dylan - the_freewheelin

Freewheelin’ in it’s released form is essentially a “best of” from one of the most creative years in Dylan’s life. The lag between sessions resulted in an album whose sound metamorphosed at least twice.
~Clinton Heylin (BD – The Recording Sessions)

Dylan nailed 3 master versions for “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” @ this important recording session.
