Classic concert: Jeff Beck Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott’s

jeff beck live rs

In November of 2007, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck took to the stage of London’s Ronnie Scott’s, a notorious jazz club with a rich history. Unfortunately, given the size of the club, only a few were lucky enough to see him and his band – Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards) and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass) – perform. Lucky for us it was recorded, and  released on film. This is a  compilation of these concerts of sorts, and I would love to see all seven shows released.

Beck’s series of concerts at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London’s Soho became the must have ticket of 2007 in London.

With a setlist that features classic tracks from across his career, a stunning backing band and special guest appearances by Joss Stone, Imogen Heap and Eric Clapton, this concert film captures for the first time the unique experience of Jeff Beck live in concert.

Highlights: Stratus (shorter than Cobham’s versions but oh so good!),  Tal Wilkenfeld’s bass solo on Wonder’s Cause we’ve ended as lovers and Jeff Beck who shines all through this film, what an incredible musician!

The band:
– Jeff Beck / guitar
– Vinnie Colaiut / drums
– Jason Rebello / keyboards
– Tal Wilkenfeld / bass guitar

Guest artists:
Joss Stone
Imogen Heap
Eric Clapton

For The Love Of Music The Story Of Nashville documentary

A very different take on the Nashville history than My Nashville by Bob Harris the BBC documentary that we posted a few months ago, but equally interesting. Great interviews and some very fine historic clips.

From the official website:

For over 130 years, Nashville has evolved into the world’s premier Music City. From the 1800s when the Fisk Jubilee Singers travelled across continents spreading their music, to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and so many others building the foundation of America’s most vibrant music scene. Today, the evolution continues as artists like The Black Keys, Eric Church and Kings of Leon break new ground in the city they all call home. We’ve created a one-hour documentary that tells this story in its entirety through the eyes of the musicians, songwriters, producers and artists who live and breathe the inspiration of this great city.

In the end, this is a film rooted in authenticity. A story filled with passion and truth. A film made simply for the love of music.

My Nashville by Bob Harris BBC documentary 2014

‘Whispering’ Bob Harris journeys to America’s country music capital to show why Nashville became Music City USA.

From the beginnings of the Grand Ole Opry on commercial radio, through the threatening onset of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s, up to the modern mainstream hits of Music Row, this is the story of how music has shaped Nashville and why today it’s a place of pilgrimage for musicians from all over the world.

As well as iconic venues on Lower Broadway and the historic hit factories of 16th Avenue, Bob also explores the East Nashville music scene and discovers a rebellious flip-side to the country coin. With exclusive performances from the city’s top talent, Bob Harris explains why country music owes its enduring success to Nashville’s unique nurturing community of songwriters.

Very nice archival footage combined with fresh insights from today’s  players. He looks not just at the music but all the stuff that goes on around it, the shops, the posters and the studios of Nashville.

Performances from:
Emmylou Harris, John Fullbright, Ashley Monroe, Jason Isbell, Angel Snow and more

Interviews with:
Emmylou Harris, Duane Eddy, Dave Stewart and Rosanne Cash, Kacey Musgraves, Eric Church and more

Documentary: Otis Redding – Soul Ambassador

soul ambassador

Otis Redding Soul Ambassador. Documentary from the BBC.

First-ever TV documentary about the legendary soul singer Otis Redding, following him from childhood and marriage to the Memphis studios and segregated Southern clubs where he honed his unique stage act and voice. Through unseen home movies, the film reveals how Otis’s 1967 tour of Britain dramatically changed his life and music.

After bringing soul to Europe he returned to conquer America, first with the ‘love-crowd’ at the Monterey Festival and then with Dock of the Bay, which topped the charts only after his death at just 26. Includes rare and unseen performances, intimate interviews with Otis’s wife and daughter, and with original band members Steve Cropper and Booker T Jones. Also featured are British fans whose lives were changed by seeing him, among them Rod Stewart, Tom Jones and Bryan Ferry.

Top 3 use of Bob Dylan songs in movies

pgbtk3

Bob Dylan is a pop culture icon. His songs (as either writer/composer or performer) are used in close to 400 movies and TV shows. Bob Dylan has been very liberal with his licensing (not like the Beatles or Tom Waits). The rules are, no cover songs, no performances, but scenes where the music of Bob Dylan is used in a way that enhances the action and/or mood. These are my three favorites.

Tell us about what you favorite Dylan cues in movies are (in the comments).

The best western ever made (some days I think it is the best film, period.) This is classic!
