Video of the day: Pete Seeger The Power of Song full documentary

We were very saddened by the news of Pete Seeger’s passing just a few days ago. He was a huge influence on many of our singer-/songwriting favorites. We have dug up a very fine documentary from 2007, it’s a mix of interviews, archival footage and home movies illuminating his life and work.

It was shown on PBS ass part of their American Masters series, and Pete Seeger certainly fits the description of an American Master.

In Pete Seeger: The Power of Song, Director Jim Brown documents the life of one of the greatest American singer/songwriters of the last century. Pete Seeger was the architect of the folk revival, writing some of its best known songs including Where Have All the Flowers Gone, Turn, Turn, Turn and If I Had A Hammer. Largely misunderstood and criticized for his strong beliefs he was picketed, protested, blacklisted, and, in spite of his enormous popularity, banned from commercial television for more than 17 years. Musicians including Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Brice Springsteen, Natalie Maines, and Peter, Paul and Mary appear in this intimate portrait and discuss Seeger s lasting influence on the fabric of American music.

Three films to celebrate Lou Reed

We miss Lou Reed dearly and want to remind people of the great artist that he was. His legacy is great!

We have dug up two very good documentaries about The Man on YouTube, hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
…and we also found a fine concert.

The first, Rock’n Roll Heart is a bio of Reed and focuses on his life and musical legacy:

The second one, Classic Albums: Transformer is, of course, about his break through solo album, Transformer:

We’ve included a fine concert as a bonus treat. This video is an intimate visual record of Reed’s sold out performance at The Bottom Line in New York City in 1983. For Reed, whose career began in Greenwich Village when he founded The Velvet Underground, this was a homecoming concert.

Today: Paranoid by Black Sabbath was released in 1970

Paranoid is the second studio album Black Sabbath. Released 18 September 1970, it was the band’s only album to top the UK Albums Chart until the release of 13 in 2013.

Paranoid contains several of the band’s best-known signature songs, including “Iron Man”, “War Pigs”, and the title track.

It is one of the first metal albums and it is my favorite among the handful metal albums that I like. Slow, heavy and very, very blues based. Black Sabbath was a great band for about 4 albums (ok, 6, and then I’m stretching it a bit), after that I lost interest. Paranoid was their crowning achievement. The playing is excellent and Ozzy sings really well. They were never better.

Paranoid was not only Black Sabbath’s most popular record (it was a number one smash in the U.K., and “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” both scraped the U.S. charts despite virtually nonexistent radio play), it also stands as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. Paranoid refined Black Sabbath’s signature sound — crushingly loud, minor-key dirges loosely based on heavy blues-rock — and applied it to a newly consistent set of songs with utterly memorable riffs, most of which now rank as all-time metal classics.

Van Morrison: One Irish Rover Happy 68th Birthday

One Irish Rover was broadcast in 1991 on BBC 2 Arena TV special and on A&E cable television program. It is a series of live songs with commentary by Morrison about music and poetry,  it has some truly amazing performances. It includes the footage of Morrison and Dylan in Greece, Georgie Fame at Ronnie Scott’s, John Lee Hooker, The Chieftains and Danish Radio Big Band.

Part 1:

This  profile of Van Morrison is both wayward and eccentric, but in a good way, an interesting way.

In One Irish Rover, Van is relaxed and playful. He is surrounded by people that he seem comfortable with, in Greece,  Morrison duets with Bob Dylan; sitting on a dock in the Louisiana bayou he do some tremendous blues with John Lee Hooker; we also see him in London playing at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, with the Danish Radio Big Band at the Barbican Center in London  and in Belfast, playing with the Chieftains.

It is a true joy, and it ends with a tender Don’t look back with John Lee Hooker that is just …incredibly good!

Today: Miles Davis released Kind of Blue in 1959 – 54 years ago

Kind of Blue is a studio album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released August 17, 1959, on Columbia Records in the United States. Recording sessions for the album took place at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City on March 2 and April 22, 1959. The sessions featured Davis’s ensemble sextet, which consisted of pianist Bill Evans (Wynton Kelly on one track), drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley.

Though precise figures have been disputed, Kind of Blue has been described by many music writers not only as Davis’s best-selling album, but as the best-selling jazz record of all time. On October 7, 2008, it was certified quadruple platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It has been regarded by many critics as the greatest jazz album of all time and Davis’s masterpiece.

The album’s influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical music, has led music writers to acknowledge it as one of the most influential albums ever made. In 2002, it was one of fifty recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In 2003, the album was ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

A Quartet In The Studio

Kind of Blue was recorded in two sessions at Columbia Records’ 30th Street Studio in New York City. On March 2, the tracks “So What”, “Freddie Freeloader”, and “Blue in Green” were recorded for side one of the original LP, and on April 22 the tracks “All Blues”, and “Flamenco Sketches” were recorded, making up side two. Production was handled by Teo Macero, who had produced Davis’s previous two LPs, and Irving Townsend.

Kind of Blue isn’t merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it’s an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album, a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps because this music never flaunts its genius… It’s the pinnacle of modal jazz — tonality and solos build from the overall key, not chord changes, giving the music a subtly shifting quality… It may be a stretch to say that if you don’t like Kind of Blue, you don’t like jazz — but it’s hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection.

A very good documentary from BBC.   Four absolutely canonical LPs were recorded that year: Kind of Blue by Miles DavisTime Out by Dave Brubeck; Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus; and The Shape of Jazz to Come by Ornette Coleman. Good interviews and great music:
