When I first heard Elvis’ voice I just knew that I wasn’t going to work for anybody; and nobody was going to be my boss. He is the deity supreme of rock & roll religion as it exists in today’s form. Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977). Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as “the King of Rock and Roll”, or simply, “the King”. Elvis Presley would have been 81 years old today.

Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and when he was 13 years old, he and his family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee.

Bob Dylan and Elvis clearly love/loved the same kind of music, blues, rock’n roll, country and gospel.

Elvis has done a few Bob Dylan songs.

Bob Dylan did many great cover versions of Stone’s “Brown Sugar” during 2002 (36 performances.. and one in 2003)

Dylan premiered this Jagger / Richards classic during the opening show of the October / November 2002 leg of his US tour. The first performance was in Seattle, Washington on October 4, 2002, after which the song was played in the number six slot at every show apart from October 13, when it was replaced by ‘ot Fade Away’. The reason for the song’s inclusion is unclear but it did coincide with the Stones’ much publicized and scrutinized 2002 “Licks” tour. …. …
Still, with guitarists Larry Campbell and Charlie Sexton on hand to crank out the riffs and add the ‘Wooh-wooh’s to the song’s conclusion, ‘Brown Sugar’ has been one of the more thrilling Bob Dylan live covers of recent years.

Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges April 2, 1942, died November 13, 2016) was an American musician and songwriter, who has recorded as a session musician, sideman, and maintained a solo career in music.

Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began playing piano at the age of four. Russell attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At this time he was already performing at Tulsa nightclubs. After moving to Los Angeles, he became a session musician, working as a pianist on the recordings of many notable musical artists from the 1960s. By the late 1960s, Russell diversified, becoming successful as an arranger and wrote and co-wrote songs. As a musician, he worked his way up from gigs as a sideman to well known performers. By 1970 he had graduated to solo recording artist, although he never ended all his previous roles within the music industry.

Russell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, March 14, 2011

According to his wife, Leon Russel died in his sleep Nov. 13 2016.

November 9: Happy Birthday Susan Tedeschi – Tedeschi covers Bob Dylan

Susan Tedeschi is an American blues and soul musician known for her singing voice, guitar playing, and stage presence. A multiple Grammy Award nominee, she is a member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band (originally known as “Soul Stew Revival”), which is a conglomeration of her band, her husband Derek Trucks’s The Derek Trucks Band, and other musicians.

She was born 47 years ago today – Happy Birthday!

She has covered a few Dylan songs.

Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, and Dave Brubeck recorded this great interpretation of “Lord Protect My Child”, which was produced by Chris Brubeck and used as the theme song for the human trafficking documentary film, Not My Life.

November 8: Bonnie Raitt sings Bob Dylan – happy birthday Bonnie Raitt!

bonnieRaitt is a very good Dylan interpreter! She has recorded some of his songs and do some in concerts.

Bonnie Raitt returned to the studio in 2012 with producer Joe Henry, a singer-songwriter known for his earthy stamp on albums by veterans such as Solomon Burke and Bettye LaVette. Four songs from those sessions, elegiac ballads that include two Bob Dylan covers, landed on Raitt’s album, Slipstream.
