May 29: Jeff Buckley died in 1997

“He really wasn’t built for the strand of rock music born of rebellion or release; he was a songbird…”
– Dominique Leone (Pitchfork)

Today marks the seventeenth anniversary of Jeff Buckley’s tragic drowning in the Wolf River. Jeff Buckley was a man who shunned celebrity, he had spent two years touring in support ofGrace, before recording what he intended be his next album, My Sweetheart the Drunk.

He never got to see its release. In 1997, while re-recording a few songs, Jeff Buckley drowned after going for a swim. It was ruled an accidental drowning.

It was posthumously released under the name Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk after Buckley’s mother asked for a title change because of the unfinished state of  the songs.

“Jeff Buckley was a pure drop in an ocean of noise.”
– Bono

Jeffrey Scott “Jeff” Buckley (November 17, 1966 – May 29, 1997), raised as Scotty Moorhead, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was the son of Tim Buckley, also a musician. After a decade as a guitarist-for-hire in Los Angeles, Buckley amassed a following in the early 1990s by playing cover songs at venues in Manhattan’s East Village, such as Sin-é, gradually focusing more on his own material. After rebuffing much interest from record labels and his father’s manager Herb Cohen, he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace. (wikipedia)

The Best Songs: Where have all the average people gone by Roger Miller

My father used to play this great record by Roger Miller, “Roger Miller” from 1969. There was one particular song that has always stuck with me. Lately I have been listening to the lyrics  more thorough and it has become one of my favourite country songs of all time.

It’s a relatively obscure record, but a great one, so start hunting collectors!

Where Have All the Average People Gone.

The late Dennis Linde wrote “Where Have All the Average People Gone.” Roger Miller recorded it and the song only reached No. 14 on the country chart in 1969, but the lyrics and social commentary still seems relevant. The song is about stereotypes and putting people into categories  based on prejudices.

“Funny I don’t fit,
Where have all the average people gone?”

But I think beautiful is simple and elegant, like a ballad with simple harmony.
~John Fogerty

Even though I have often recorded alone, I still feel the best music is made by musicians playing off each other.

Bob Dylan: a year has gone – month by month since May 2014

We’ve had a great Bob Dylan year and it is time to look at some of the highlights. We have posted almost more than 600 (closer to 700) posts about Bob Dylan, so, it has been hard to distill this into one or two highlights per month from the last year (from May 24 2014 to May 24 2015).

May 2014:

Bob Dylan celebrated his 73rd birthday!

A very interesting book was reviewed with mind maps here at alldylan.com:

The 20 best songs Bob Dylan left in the studio

dylan studio

Bob Dylan left many a jewel in the studio. Some were re-recorded for later albums, others were abandoned for good.

All the songs on this list have been officially released at a later date.. they might not be the best version of the song.. I will point out.. but at least he eventually put a version out.

some remarks:

  • I’ve decided to include “New York versions” from the famous Blood On The Tracks sessions in 1974
  • Songs from the “Greatest Hits 2 recording sessions” in 1971 included on GH2.. are ruled out
  • I choose to include “the real” “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky”… even though a vulgar version was released on “Empire Burlesque”

..and again: lists are FUN – MAKE LISTS NOT WAR

My list:

  1. Blind Willie McTell
  2. Idiot Wind – New York version
  3. She’s Your Lover Now
  4. Red River Shore
