September 13: Watch Bob Dylan Performing “Ring Them Bells” in Dublin 2000

Redirecting to a newer version of this post….

Ring them bells, ye heathen
From the city that dreams
Ring them bells from the sanctuaries
’Cross the valleys and streams
For they’re deep and they’re wide
And the world’s on its side
And time is running backwards
And so is the bride

June 22: Bob Dylan @ Newcastle, 2004 (Video)

I have to agree with the Newcastle 22nd reviews. This show was very special. From the opening Seeing the Real You At Last to the encores. I will never forget the echoing vocal on Cold Irons Bound which danced around the Arena, it was like listening to Moses.

May 22: Bob Dylan The Great Music Experience, Nara, Japan 1994 (video)

For the first time ever, Dylan was backed by a full orchestra, the New Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. The final day was widely televised and Dylan was in magnificent form. I remember being near tears as The Voice returned in all its full, expressive, raging glory. I watched the footage again and again, transfixed at what seemed the best ever rendition of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and a magical and magisterial “Ring Them Bells”, with Dylan filmed beneath a huge statue of Buddha.

March 7: Bob Dylan’s second recording session for Oh Mercy in 1989

bob dylan Oh-Mercy

“Bono had heard a few of those songs and suggested that Daniel [Lanois] could really record them right, Daniel came to see me when we were playing in New, Orleans last year and… we hit it off. He had an understanding of what my music was all about.”
~Bob Dylan (to Edna Gundersen Sept 1989)

On the first recording session for “Oh Mercy” he only tried “Born In Time”, and two versions from this session was released on “Tell Tale Signs”. The second sessions focused on “What Good Am I?” & Ring Them Bells.
