Today: Live Rust by Neil Young and Crazy Horse was released in 1979

Live Rust is a live album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, recorded during his fall 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour.

Live Rust composed of performances recorded at several venues, including the Cow Palace outside San Francisco. Young also directed a companion film, Rust Never Sleeps, under his directorial pseudonym “Bernard Shakey”, which consisted of footage from the Cow Palace  (Young had wanted to give the live album the same title, but Reprise vetoed the idea, fearing confusion with the earlier album, Rust Never Sleeps).

The CD version of the album was slightly edited to fit on a single compact disc, which were limited to 74 minutes at the time this album was first issued on CD. To adhere to the time limit, a little over one minute of the guitar solo “Cortez the Killer” was eliminated.

To take out a whole minute from one of those rare perfect songs, it is just wrong! …and it is the shortened version that is available on Spotify as well.

Live Rust repeat four songs from Rust Never Sleeps (album) and Neil Young was accused of releasing the same material over again (He had also released the compilation album Decade in 1977).

I like that he did release it and Live Rust is an excellent concert album, one of the best. He gave us a fantastic document from a great tour.

The album goes from slow, folksy tunes to raging rockers, Young’s versatility is astonishing.

.. and we don’t have those fucking goblins from the concert film running around.

Photo Special: The South at Cafe Mono in Oslo 2013

The South Mono 2013-2

Last night we went to Oslo to see The South, it was our first show with them after the new album, The Further Inside You Go... and we were excited. It is safe to say that they fulfilled all expectations, they are the best live band in Norway at the moment. They are playing in Bergen tomorrow and in Stavanger the 16th November (we’ll be there), run out and get tickets, folks. You will not se a better Norwegian band this year!

They played two sets with a ten minute intermission (just like Zimmy does these days) both sets were fantastic, but when the y “take off” on the longer jams in the second set, I’m in heaven. Be sure to clap them back on stage after the final song, they really gave us a treat last night, the encore started out as a fun and fairly faithful rendition of Scarlet Begonias (Grateful Dead) but then they switch gears and ends up into a rip-roaring version of Allman Brothers’ Jessica. Perfect! (the piano solo from the original was included and it was so fun and so great!)

Well, as you’ve already guessed, we had a tremendous time in Oslo and we are really looking forward to the Stavanger concert.

Photo Special: The Low Frequency in Stereo live in Haugesund 2013

I attended a very good concert last night!

The Low Frequency in Stereo  played through their latest album, Pop Obskura. I don’t have the set-list, but most of the album was played. It is, kind of, a new direction for LFiS and it suits the band, more vocals and very dreamy pop (with som noisy elements of course) After that they did a sweet set of encores, old favorites in a very droning way and at the same time it was, dare I say it, funky! It was a great concert!

The new songs add a dimension to the band, and the contrast to the old stuff is very effective, love the funky bass lines on some of the new songs. When I say funky, I don’t mean in a black-funk sort of style, but more a  Talking Heads, B52‘s or Television “funk”.

Secondhand Nation:

My comparisons are not precise, The Low Frequency in Stereo is a unique band, a band on the verge of something big (if the world is remotely just…). Even if I can hear elements from the past in their music, they sound fresh and very modern. It is what the title on their new album says, obscure pop. Good pop.

It was a dark stage and the shots are what they are, but look at my “artistic expressions” and not the technical stuff.

Put on the album (it is now on Spotify), look at the pictures and relive the concert (or go buy a ticket to their next show if you haven’t seen them, they’re worth every penny).

Supporting LFiS was Palmface, I have written a bit about them earlier (they played support for I Was a King) and they keep improving. A very promising young indie-pop outfit, looking forward to follow them in the future. They did a good job, and I took a few pictures of them. Check at the end of this post.

Live, Van Morrison

Van Morrison: One Irish Rover Happy 68th Birthday

One Irish Rover was broadcast in 1991 on BBC 2 Arena TV special and on A&E cable television program. It is a series of live songs with commentary by Morrison about music and poetry,  it has some truly amazing performances. It includes the footage of Morrison and Dylan in Greece, Georgie Fame at Ronnie Scott’s, John Lee Hooker, The Chieftains and Danish Radio Big Band.

Part 1:

This  profile of Van Morrison is both wayward and eccentric, but in a good way, an interesting way.

In One Irish Rover, Van is relaxed and playful. He is surrounded by people that he seem comfortable with, in Greece,  Morrison duets with Bob Dylan; sitting on a dock in the Louisiana bayou he do some tremendous blues with John Lee Hooker; we also see him in London playing at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, with the Danish Radio Big Band at the Barbican Center in London  and in Belfast, playing with the Chieftains.

It is a true joy, and it ends with a tender Don’t look back with John Lee Hooker that is just …incredibly good!
