The Best songs: Bruce Springsteen – Lost in the flood

Lost in the Flood is a song by Bruce Springsteen. It was released on his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. in 1973.

Lost in the Flood is a sparse, piano-driven song, seemingly about a Vietnam War veteran. This is the first of many epic Springsteen songs that elicit strong emotions, usually of despair, grief, and small glimpse of hope. The treatment of veterans in the United States has always been important to Springsteen. The lyrics tell a loose story, invoking a series of images that tell three different stories for each of the three verses.

Studio version:

LOST IN THE FLOOD was recorded during the Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. album recording sessions, sometime between early July and early September 1972. Springsteen sings vocals on this track, and is backed by Vini Lopez on drums, David Sancious on piano and organ, and Garry Tallent on  bass. The track also features dubbed sound effects courtesy of Steve Van Zandt added later in the sessions, including the opening “thunder crack” which Steve created by dropping an amplifier on a concrete floor. That was Van Zandt’s sole contribution to the recording of the Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. album.

According to Sony’s database of Springsteen recording sessions, LOST IN THE FLOOD was cut on 27 Jun 1972 at 914 Sound Studios.

Rolling Stone Magazine put it at number 37 of the “Greatest Stoner Albums” and said:
“Like a super-stoned campfire jam with an A-list of Cali hippie-rockers – including Joni Mitchell and most of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and CSNY – this hazy solo project by the altered-consciousness overachiever sounds like it was pretty much made up on the spot. See the toasted strum-fest “Music Is Love” (with Neil Young on congas!) and “Tamalpais High,” with Jerry Garcia and Jorma Kaukonen noodling around wordless Crosby-Nash harmonies. By the time it’s over, you may not remember your name, either.”

I believe a couple of Santana and Quicksilver Messenger Service members also visited.

David Crosby – Cowboy Movie (Live, Jan 31, 2014) a very fine version! :

It is an album that grows on you, it feels like a mess at first, but it soon starts to make sense. This is a coherent album with wonderful melodies and harmonies. For me it is the quintessential “Laurel Canyon” album, a true classic.

Beggars Banquet is the seventh British and ninth American studio album by the Rolling Stones. It was released in December 1968. It marked a return to the band’s R&B roots and is generally viewed as more primal than the psychedelia of Their Satanic Majesties Request. It also started off a string records that is usually regarded as the band’s best work.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards hired producer Jimmy Miller, who had produced the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. This partnership would prove so successful that Jimmy Miller would work with the band until 1973.

The recording sessions for Beggars Banquet started in March and finished in June.

Today’s unreleased track is Highway Child off these sessions.
