Oh My God – it is Bob Dylan remixed

bd_laugh 2

Ok, I expect this post to stir up some reactions among the Bob Dylan followers, but I think the man himself would approve (just listen to the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack people…).

These days all artists gets “remixed” or “mashed-up” so why not Bob Dylan? His lyrics are often borderline rap-songs anyway, and his singing is rhythmically close to the way modern hip-hop artists do. Especially his early 60s stuff. Bob Dylan have always been concerned with what is called “flow” in his delivery. Words are not just words, it matters how they are sung.

Ok, so bear with me, open your mind and “enjoy” the ride.

I must say that I haven’t talked to Egil about posting this, I would think he considers it close to blasphemy…

Today: The late Ian Curtis was born in 1956

IAN CURTIS OF JOY DIVISION

Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 – 18 May 1980) was an English musician, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division. Joy Division released their debut album, Unknown Pleasures, in 1979 and recorded their follow-up, Closer, in 1980.

Curtis, who suffered from epilepsy and depression, committed suicide on 18 May 1980, on the eve of Joy Division’s first North American tour, resulting in the band’s dissolution and the subsequent formation of New Order.

Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style and songwriting filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness and alienation.

Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion).

Here’s a brilliant documentary on Joy Division and Ian Curtis (it says Ita Sub, but there’s no subtitles):

I always thought their music was sombre, even sad, but these days I can hear a kind optimism or eagerness in the songs. Great to hear them again. They certainly made a big impression on me in my formative years as a music nerd.

Ida Jenshus is a terrific artist and she’s a great entertainer as well. There are many artists that have forgotten that part, she hasn’t. I’ve seen her several times now, and she and her band always delivers. In Vikedal it started a bit on the slow side but soon they ventured into a more southern rock territory, from then on in they sailed on monumental jams and great songs. The audience was on the chatty side, but the band ignored the talkative bunch. We who were there for the music got a great concert.

I’m looking forward to Notodden Blues Festival 🙂

I just have to pick a favorite moment from last night’s show: When the song Little Blue slided into a fantastic Words (Between the lines) by Neil Young! Magic!

Yuma Sun is fast becoming the band to look out for in Norway, and after a year of extensive touring they really gave us a good and tight show. What’s even more promising is that the new songs are better than those off the debut album, Romanza. We’re looking forward to see them in the future, and we are looking forward to their new album (hopefully this fall).

Oh, and by the way, you can now buy Romanza on vinyl (and CD of course). Check out their facebook page.

Unreleased – Freehold by Bruce Springsteen

I was born right here on Randolph Street in Freehold
Here right behind that big red maple in Freehold
Well I went to school right here
Got laid and had my first beer
In Freehold

Today we have found a great “story-song” from Bruce Springsteen that has never been officially released.

This is a sweet and funny song that appeared for the first time live on 8 Nov 1996 in Freehold, NJ. Freehold/ In Freehold is never officially released and I think it has only been played live (not recorded in studio). It is a song in the same vein as Growing Up, but set at an earlier age and in a less serious tone.

The debut of the song was at The Ghost Of Tom Joad Solo Acoustic Tour (Freehold 8 Nov) and it has been played around 20 times after that. It is speculated that the song was written specifically for this event. It was a sort of homecoming show in the sense that he grew up in Freehold, but hadn’t played there since 1967. Bruce Springsteen left Freehold in 1968.

Freehold (first performance, audio):

In 1999 he added a verse based on true events:
