Johnny Winter – “Highway 61 Revisited” (videos)

johnnywinter

In 1969, Johnny Winter covered “Highway 61 Revisited” on his second Columbia release, Second Winter. Winter’s rendition is regarded as “a career-defining track,” and the song continued as a live standard of his. A 10-minute version of the song appears on his 1976 live album, Captured Live !, and he also performed it live in 1992 for the The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration album, which saluted Dylan’s three decades as a recording artist. From “Second Winter” (1969) album:

Oh, God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe said, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
God said, “No” Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want, Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’, you better run”
Well, Abe said, “Where d’you want this killin’ done?”
God said, “Out on Highway 61”

Bob Dylan: 7 essential videos from the 70’s

bob dylan 1976

Being on tour is like being in limbo. It’s like going from nowhere to nowhere.
~To John Rockwell, Jan 1974

Rimbaud has been a big influence on me. When I’m on the road and want to read something that makes sense to me, I go to a bookstore and read his words.
~To Neil Hickey, Sep 1976

..maybe, the end of the first Rolling Thunder tour. Or the second Rolling Thunder tour – at least I was doing the best I could in the environment I was in… And now I’m also doing the best I can within this environment
~to Craig McGregor, March 1978

I played acoustical songs on that band tour in ‘74, but I pushed too hard. I played acoustical guitar on the Rolling Thunder tours, but I had to push too hard. And for my type of style I can’t really afford to push too hard, because I lose the reason behind the song. If you heard me sittin’ in a room singing I wouldn’t be pushing too hard.
~to Craig McGregor, March 1978

Make promises by the hours
My love she laughs like the flowers
Valentines can’t buy her

Bob Dylan’s best songs: Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat)

bob dylan where are you tonight

The truth was obscure, too profound and too pure
To live it you have to explode
In that last hour of need, we entirely agreed
Sacrifice was the code of the road
~Where are you tonight

JC: “Sacrifice is the code of the road” is what you sing in Where Are You Tonight? To die before dying, shedding your skin, making new songs out of old ones.
BD: That’s my mission in life… “He not busy being born is busy dying.” Did you bring your
parachute?

~Bob Dylan interviewed by Jonathan Cott

‘Where Are You Tonight?’ stands alongside the best album-closers Dylan has written to order throughout his long career.
