Who’s your favorite songwriter – Lennon or McCartney ?

This post is all about the songs…

Although the songs where credited Lennon-McCartney / McCartney-Lennon, one of them usually contributed more than the other.

Many books, interviews, articles & not at least the artwork itself  have helped us  get a sense of  who was the “mastermind” behind each song. Most of them where collaborations.. but usually one of them was more to “blame”.

Some important books on this subject:

  • Ian Macdonald – Revolution in the head
  • William J. Dowlding – Beatlesongs
  • Mark Lewisohn – The Complete Beatles Chronicle
  • The Beatles – The Beatles Anthology
  • Bård Ose – Beatles hele livet (Norwegian)

Tom Waits top 10 music videos

Wikipedia:
music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 1980s, these works were described by various terms including “illustrated song”, “filmed insert”, “promotional (promo) film”, “promotional clip” or “film clip”.

Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song’s lyrics, making it less literal than expected. Other music videos may be without a set concept, being merely a filmed version of the song’s live performance.

My favourite music video artist is without a doubt, Tom Waits! Since I saw the video for In the Neighbourhood in 1983, I’ve eagerly waited for his promotional videos for his albums. They are valid works of art in their own right, and combined with Tom Waits’ songs they’re taken to a higher level.

Here are my ten favourites:

1. In the Neighbourhood from Swordfishtrombones:

His first and in my opinion it is his best video.

The 20 best songs Bob Dylan left in the studio

dylan studio

Bob Dylan left many a jewel in the studio. Some were re-recorded for later albums, others were abandoned for good.

All the songs on this list have been officially released at a later date.. they might not be the best version of the song.. I will point out.. but at least he eventually put a version out.

some remarks:

  • I’ve decided to include “New York versions” from the famous Blood On The Tracks sessions in 1974
  • Songs from the “Greatest Hits 2 recording sessions” in 1971 included on GH2.. are ruled out
  • I choose to include “the real” “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky”… even though a vulgar version was released on “Empire Burlesque”

..and again: lists are FUN – MAKE LISTS NOT WAR

My list:

  1. Blind Willie McTell
  2. Idiot Wind – New York version
  3. She’s Your Lover Now
  4. Red River Shore
  5. Caribbean Wind
  6. Up To Me
  7. Dignity
  8. If You See Her Say Hello – New York version
  9. Lay Down Your Weary Tune
  10. Series Of Dreams
  11. I’ll Keep It With Mine
  12. Angelina
  13. Call Letter Blues
  14. Foot Of Pride
  15. Abandoned Love

10 Good cover versions of Bob Dylan’s Christian songs (edit)

Bob Dylan

10 Good cover versions of Bob Dylan’s Christian songs

I love the “Christian period” in Dylan’s career, always have. In the beginning I felt quite alone in my belief in Dylan, but now he is finally getting recognised for his faith-based songs. The Bob Dylan records from that period are so much better than the critics at the time wrote, they were simply too shocked by his conversion to see the beauty in the songs. I have to say that not all critics were harsh, some recognised quality.

And so what if he’s taken up with the God of Wrath? Since when have you been so crazy about the God of Love? Or any other species of hippie bullshit?
– Robert Christgau

First his live shows from these years got well deserved praise and now finally the albums. They might not be among his best by Dylan’s standard, but by anyone else’s they’re actually quite decent!

Bob Dylan Gospel 2

Here are evidence that the songs are solid Bob Dylan compositions. I have tried not to only include gospel choirs, there are a lot of performances I could have chosen, but instead I’ve tried to show how the songs work in different styles.

Enjoy!

I Believe In You – Sinead O’Connor

Such a presence, and the voice, man!

15 great Americana/Country versions of Neil Young songs

Neil Young has always had one foot in the rock camp and one in the country camp, he is one of the true entrepreneurs of country-rock. He has released pure rock albums and equally pure country albums, he has toured with rock bands and he has toured with a country music ensemble.

“I was told that no matter what I did, country radio would not play me, mostly because of my songwriting. I’d put out things like ‘Southern Man’ and ‘Alabama so culturally, they drew the line.” “But while we were not accepted by country radio, we were accepted by country musicians, they all played ‘Southern Man’ with me. They didn’t care. It wasn’t about that.” – Neil Young to Rolling Stone Magazine

I have picked 15 examples of  how his songs sounds in a country/americana setting, it sounds right , it sounds natural!
