Feb 22: David Crosby released If I Could Only Remember My Name in 1971
“My girlfriend had been killed in a car crash and the only place I could exist was in the studio, Garcia would come every night. The Airplane and the Dead were recording in the same complex… They were all buddies of mine…”

Rolling Stone Magazine put it at number 37 of the “Greatest Stoner Albums” and said:
“Like a super-stoned campfire jam with an A-list of Cali hippie-rockers – including Joni Mitchell and most of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and CSNY – this hazy solo project by the altered-consciousness overachiever sounds like it was pretty much made up on the spot. See the toasted strum-fest “Music Is Love” (with Neil Young on congas!) and “Tamalpais High,” with Jerry Garcia and Jorma Kaukonen noodling around wordless Crosby-Nash harmonies. By the time it’s over, you may not remember your name, either.”
I believe a couple of Santana and Quicksilver Messenger Service members also visited.

It is an album that grows on you, it feels like a mess at first, but it soon starts to make sense. This is a coherent album with wonderful melodies and harmonies. For me it is the quintessential “Laurel Canyon” album, a true classic.

The Rolling stones – Highway Child (unreleased)
Beggars Banquet is the seventh British and ninth American studio album by the Rolling Stones. It was released in December 1968. It marked a return to the band’s R&B roots and is generally viewed as more primal than the psychedelia of Their Satanic Majesties Request. It also started off a string records that is usually regarded as the band’s best work.
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards hired producer Jimmy Miller, who had produced the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. This partnership would prove so successful that Jimmy Miller would work with the band until 1973.
The recording sessions for Beggars Banquet started in March and finished in June.
Today’s unreleased track is Highway Child off these sessions.

Live At The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA March 25. 1987
“Let’s Have A Ball” is a 90-minute Ry Cooder concert film by Les Blank, better known for Burden of Dreams (1982), his chronicle of the trials of Werner Herzog and company during the making of Fitzcarraldo. He also made the fantastic, The Blues Accordin’ to Lightnin’ Hopkins.
“Let’s Have A Ball” catches Ry Cooder and his band playing during their Get Rhythm tour. The film was screened in Europe and elsewhere but not in the US, and for now remains unavailable officially.
This is too bad, it is a great concert film, the sound quality and performances are tremendous.
Highlights:
The slow and heavy Down in Mississippi, the vocal virtuosos and Cooder’s guitar are out of this world!
The 16-minute version of Down In Hollywood where everyone, singers included, gets to show off their solo prowess.
