The September 19th 1978 concert at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, in Bruce’s home state of New Jersey, is arguably Bruce Springsteen’s single greatest live performance. I’ve listened to quite a lot classic Springsteen bootleg concerts over the years.. this remains my favorite.

This show has been widely bootlegged under the title “Piece de Resistance”. It is a stunning concert not least with Roy Bittan’s brilliant piano playing and Max Weinberg’s clockwork drumming providing a backdrop as hard as diamonds. It also has that characteristic feature of the tour that the slow songs are played with a burning intensity while songs like “”Badlands” and “Born to Run” sometimes display a New York Punk intensity. ~Red on Black (amazon.com review)

190978 springsteen From brucebase: Radio broadcast, soundboard tapes (all three nights in Passaic were recorded by the Record Plant’s mobile unit, both on multi-track and live-to-two track) and professionally shot in-house black and white video. Probably one of the best all-time concert recordings. Broadcast on WNEW-FM New York and nine other stations in the north-east, including WBCN-FM and WCOZ-FM Boston, WIOQ-FM Philadelphia and WIYY-FM Baltimore. Set includes great versions of “Because The Night” and “Fire,” and also includes what many consider to be the finest examples of “Racing In The Street” and “Thunder Road” ever. Essential. Also, video footage is available. A short live excerpt from this show (Bruce’s band introduction during “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”) was officially – and exclusively – released on a promotion-only 7″ flexidisc issued to subscribers of Austrian pop magazine “Rennbahn Express” in June 1981. Thanks to Lost in the Flood for that info. Following the show, WBCN-TV news reporter Felipe Luciano interviews Bruce. Released on CDs:

A concert perhaps best known for the outstanding video footage available. “Backstreets” has some lines from “Pretty Flamingo” in the ‘Sad Eyes’ section. Tremendous versions of “Quarter To Three” (particularly the video) and “Prove It All Night” with the cab driver intro and an outstanding guitar solo. “Jungleland” cuts after Steve’s guitar solo, and the start of “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)” is also missing – presumably due to tape changes. The show features a particularly loose and active Bruce, maybe because the next day he was going home to New Jersey for the first time in a year. The video now circulates in good quality on DVD ‘I F*cked Everything Up’.

“I’m watching the video of this concert. I cannot help writing some lines on it. I don’t want to encourage the buying of unauthorized material, but if you already have all the official video items, you really got to have this. Performance like ‘Sandy’ and ‘Prove it all night’ as captured in this film make you understand how great he is, just in case there was any doubt left.

All the show was great, but Sandy is above all… and this show was not better than all the other ’78 shows…. I’m just speaking of this because I just have this one…. This reminds me of an old phrase I saw written on some horrible shirt : “People can be divided in two halves; the ones who love him, and the ones who never saw him playing live…”

Back here… the video is goin’ on…. I cannot write nothing on Growin’up and Backstreets. The ‘sad eyes-drive all night-pretty flamingo’ interlude in backstreets is simply one of the best things you may ever watch and listen to…. Also Because the Night is terrific”

 With at least 200,000 people in attendance, Dylan closes his triumphant European tour at the Blackbushe Aerodrome, in Camberley, Surrey. Twenty five days after the last Earls Court show, Dylan brings a very different set back, performing 10 songs not performed at his previous show in England: “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue,” “Girl from the North Country,” “Is Your Love in Vain?,” a tentative “Where Are You Tonight’,” an acoustic “Gates of Eden,” “True Love Tends to Forget,” and a first encore of “Changing of the Guards” with Eric Clapton on guitar. Also performed are “Simple Twist of Fate” and “To Ramona,” both performed only one night at Earls Court. Surprisingly, though, Dylan omits “She’s Love Crazy,” “The Man in Me,” and ”I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” all performed regularly on the mainland European dates. Nevertheless, few in the massive crowd notice such omissions, as Dylan proves his pulling power is undiminished by his years away, attracting the largest crowd for a pop festival in Britain since the Isle of Wight nine years earlier.

I coached at the same high school for 35  years and have had 4 players play in the Major Leagues. I also coached for 10 summers in the Alaska  League, a college-level league, 5 summers in Anchorage and 5 in Honolulu, Hawaii. My photographic  interests these days revolve primarily around travel. My wife and I go somewhere every summer, our  favorite destinations being Cuba, Italy, Croatia, Morocco, France and Southeast Asia, and numerous  other destinations. A while ago we here at Alldylan got an email from Chris where he told us that he had started digitizing his old slides, among them quite a few Dylan photos never before published. He asked if we would like to publish some of them on Alldylan. We were stunned, what an offer! We wrote back and said that we would be honoured.

We will publish several posts with photos from Dylan’s tours in 1974, 1978,1979 and 1980, and after that we will maybe post other artists. Chris has pictures of great historic value and he can be contacted if anyone wants to buy Hi-Res shots for printing. He has 99 shots from the 1978 Oakland show! We are not sure if it was the first or second night.
