August 16: Sleeps with Angels by Neil Young and Crazy Horse was released in 1994

This is an album that ranks among Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s best, and in effect it is “Tonight’s the night part 2”. It is a dark, brooding masterpiece, with many of the same themes as “Tonight’s…”. It is a record than explain to us why Neil Young have earned the honorary title, The Grunge Godfather.

Sleeps With Angels is the twenty-second studio album by  Neil Young, his sixth with Crazy Horse, it was released on the Warner Bros. Records/Reprise (same as Tonight’s the Night by the way) label.

This brilliant song (one of his best) was recorded on November 29, 1975 @ Broken Arrow Ranch, Woodside CA.

It was released as a single on August 8, 1977 & included on the album American Stars ‘n Bars (1977).

Playlist: 11 hidden gems from Neil Young

What is a “buried treasure”, “a hidden gem” or “an underrated gem” ? Well, to me, it’s a great song that seldom (or never) is on the “best-of” lists of the artist, and it could have/should have been.

I am talking about great songs that are often overlooked. We are talking about personal favorites that you wouldn’t rate among the artists top 20 (maybe), but deserve some more praise and recognition than they get.

Neil Young has a lot of those, here are my 11 chosen ones (the Spotify playlist is at the end of the post):

August 19: Neil Young and Crazy Horse released Greendale in 2003

Greendale is the name of an album, movie and graphic novel by Neil Young. As the twenty-seventh album by Neil Young, Young and Crazy Horse’s Greendale, a 10-song rock opera, is set in a fictional California seaside town. Based on the saga of the Green family, the “audio novel” has been compared to the literary classics of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio for its complexity and emotional depth in exploring a small town in America.

Greendale combines many themes on corruption, environmentalism and mass media consolidation. The album, concert, film and DVDs have produced a vast divergence of critical opinion ranging from being called “amateur” to being voted as one of the best albums of 2003 by Rolling Stone magazine music critics.

Falling from above:

The CD was originally released with a DVD of live “Neil-only” acoustic performance of the Greendale material from Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland. In 2004, the CD was released with a new DVD containing a live performance of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. A DVD-Audio version was also released, with both Advanced Resolution Stereo and 5.1 Surround sound mixes, and a video of “Devil’s Sidewalk” from the film. In late 2004, the feature-length DVD with actors lip-synching the material was released.

Today: Live Rust by Neil Young and Crazy Horse was released in 1979

Live Rust is a live album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, recorded during his fall 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour.

Live Rust composed of performances recorded at several venues, including the Cow Palace outside San Francisco. Young also directed a companion film, Rust Never Sleeps, under his directorial pseudonym “Bernard Shakey”, which consisted of footage from the Cow Palace  (Young had wanted to give the live album the same title, but Reprise vetoed the idea, fearing confusion with the earlier album, Rust Never Sleeps).

The CD version of the album was slightly edited to fit on a single compact disc, which were limited to 74 minutes at the time this album was first issued on CD. To adhere to the time limit, a little over one minute of the guitar solo “Cortez the Killer” was eliminated.

To take out a whole minute from one of those rare perfect songs, it is just wrong! …and it is the shortened version that is available on Spotify as well.

Live Rust repeat four songs from Rust Never Sleeps (album) and Neil Young was accused of releasing the same material over again (He had also released the compilation album Decade in 1977).

I like that he did release it and Live Rust is an excellent concert album, one of the best. He gave us a fantastic document from a great tour.

The album goes from slow, folksy tunes to raging rockers, Young’s versatility is astonishing.

.. and we don’t have those fucking goblins from the concert film running around.
