Dec 27: Bob Dylan Blood On The Tracks, 5th recording session in 1974

blood-on-the-tracks-album-cover

By November 1974 Dylan had cut a test pressing of “Blood On The Tracks” based on his 4 recording sessions in New York (in September), and Columbia was aiming for a pre-christmas release.

Our earlier posts on the “New York Sessions”:

But after “sleeping on it” & getting advice from his brother David Zimmerman, he decided to re-record several songs @ Minneapolis’ Sound 80 Studios.

Unfortunately, one of the people Dylan had played his test pressing to, his younger brother David, told him that it would never sell, presumably based on the sheer starkness of the sound, rather than the nakedness of his brother’s soul, and convinced him to rerecord half a dozen of the songs in Minneapolis, with a set of local musicians that he would assemble at a studio he knew well, Sound 8o, making himself producer..

The seven Best Box Sets of 2014

Bob Dylan Basement Tapes Complete box set

Best Box Sets of 2014

Wikipedia:
A box set (or boxed set) is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) packaged in a box, for sale as a single unit…contemporary box sets are usually made up of three or more discs boxes, covering a broad range of boxes of the music of a given artist or genre. Artists and bands with an extremely long and successful career often have anthology or “essential” collections of their boxes of music released as box sets. These often include rare and never-before-released tracks.

Our list has box sets that has audio, film and tv recordings and books. It’s been a good year for box sets.

1. Bob Dylan and The Band – The Basement Tapes Complete, The Bootleg Series Vol.11:

A treasure that has to be enjoyed in portions, it’s so overwhelming. If you try to take it all in, you’ll be guaranteed to miss some of the gems in this chest. Better sound than on the bootlegs and a lot of songs we hadn’t heard before. I would have put it on the top spot just for Sign on the cross to be honest, that one song is worth the whole set.

John Fullbright plays Bob Dylan

John Fullbright (born April 23, 1988) is an American singer-songwriter from Bearden, Oklahoma. Fullbright is a former member of the Oklahoma Red Dirt band Turnpike Troubadours and the Mike McClure Band. While still in high school, Fullbright performed at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in the nearby town of Okemah, Oklahoma. In 2009 he released the album, Live at the Blue Door and three years later released his first studio album, From the Ground Up, which received a Grammy nomination in the category Best Americana Album. In 2014 he released the album Songs, an album that will be high on our year-end list.

John Fullbright plays Bob Dylan in a very soulful and intense way, he really feels the lyrics and has a great melodic sense. He is great both on a piano and guitar.

John Fullbright performs Dylan’s It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry (Recorded at the 3rd Coast Music showcase March 18, 2012):

one time, for one brief day, i was the man for you
last night i heard you talkin in your sleep
saying things you shouldn’t say, oh baby
you just may have to go to jail someday

Great song, performance & video.
