13 great Americana versions of Bob Dylan songs

Americana is an amalgam of roots music formed by the confluence of the shared and varied traditions that make up the American musical ethos; specifically those sounds that are merged from folk, country, blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll and other external influences. Americana, as defined by the Americana Music Association (AMA), is “contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw. While acoustic instruments are often present and vital, Americana also often uses a full electric band.”

A while ago I did a post on my top 10 country versions of Bob Dylan songs (soon to be updated), since then I’ve been made aware of a lot more songs from people who read the original post. Then most of my pickings where of classic country leaning on outlaw country, in this post I will concentrate on the new generation of country/ alt. country.

Best Albums of 2014: 9 – 1

AS 2014 draws to a close, it’s time to look back on the last 12 months in music and as tradition goes, this involves the unveiling of our 35 Best Albums Of The Year – as always, it has been a struggle, we have fought and bled and finally agreed on the 35 best records of 2014.  There will be three posts, the excitement will be unbearable and the top 10 will be revealed in a few of days..

What did we get wrong? What did we miss? Well, nothing of course, this is THE list.  No, just kidding, this is our view of the year in music, and as we have said many times before, we only write about the stuff we like and we can not reach everything.

English-Oceans

9. Drive-by Truckers – English Oceans

This is a good straight rock album and it is a Cooley album (he has six compositions shaping the tone of the album).Cooley also takes lead vocals on Patterson Hood’s lyrics on Til He’s Dead or Rises, a first for Drive-by Truckers after nearly 20 years of playing. The Truckers sounds pissed-off, it’s a powerful album and immediate album (recorded in 13 days).  We can always count on Drive-by Truckers and even if this isn’t their greatest album, it’s damn good and the ninth best album of 2014.

Selected songs: Primer Coat, Grand Canyon, First Air of Autumn

Drive-By Truckers – Full Performance (Live on KEXP),
Song list:
Primer Coat
The Part Of Him
First Air Of Autumn
Pauline Hawkins

John Fullbright plays Bob Dylan

John Fullbright (born April 23, 1988) is an American singer-songwriter from Bearden, Oklahoma. Fullbright is a former member of the Oklahoma Red Dirt band Turnpike Troubadours and the Mike McClure Band. While still in high school, Fullbright performed at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in the nearby town of Okemah, Oklahoma. In 2009 he released the album, Live at the Blue Door and three years later released his first studio album, From the Ground Up, which received a Grammy nomination in the category Best Americana Album. In 2014 he released the album Songs, an album that will be high on our year-end list.

John Fullbright plays Bob Dylan in a very soulful and intense way, he really feels the lyrics and has a great melodic sense. He is great both on a piano and guitar.

John Fullbright performs Dylan’s It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry (Recorded at the 3rd Coast Music showcase March 18, 2012):

Bergenfest 2014: Must see concerts

bergenfest english

We are going on a trip next week, it is time for our annual visit to Bergenfest. We are very excited!

Bergenfest is an open air and club festival in the city centre of Bergen(Norway). It has over the years established itself as a modern music festival of both national and international interest. Open air shows take place in medieval fortress and castle in the city’s historic centre. Main stage capacity 6.700, second stage capacity 2.000, the third stage is an indoor “wooden tent” scene called “The Magic Mirror” stage. It is a relatively small but brilliant festival.

We will post daily reports from the festival.

These are the concerts we will try to catch.
