July 28 in music history

July 28: The late Mike Bloomfield was born in 1943 71 years ago (read more)

Michael Bloomfield was one of America’s first great white blues guitarists, earning his reputation on the strength of his work in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. His expressive, fluid solo lines and prodigious technique graced many other projects — most notably Bob Dylan’s earliest electric forays — and he also pursued a solo career, with variable results. Uncomfortable with the reverential treatment afforded a guitar hero, Bloomfield tended to shy away from the spotlight after spending just a few years in it; he maintained a lower-visibility career during the ’70s due to his distaste for fame and his worsening drug problems, which claimed his life in 1981.

David “Junior” Kimbrough (July 28, 1930 – January 17, 1998) was an American blues musician. His best known work included “Keep Your Hands Off Her” and “All Night Long”. Music journalist Tony Russell stated “his raw, repetitive style suggests an archaic forebear of John Lee Hooker, a character his music shares with that of fellow North Mississippian R. L. Burnside”.  Richard William “Rick” Wright (28 July 1943 – 15 September 2008) was an English musician, composer, singer and songwriter, best known for his career with Pink Floyd. A multi-instrumentalist, Wright’s richly textured keyboard layers were a vital ingredient and a distinctive characteristic of Pink Floyd’s sound. Wright frequently sang harmony and occasionally lead vocals on stage and in the studio with Pink Floyd (most notably on the songs “Time”, “Echoes”, “Us and Them”, “Wearing the Inside Out”, “Astronomy Domine” and “Matilda Mother”).  rick_wright

July 24: Bob Dylan & others: The Weight, Virginia Beach, Virginia 2013 (video)

bob dylan, jeff tweedy, + 2013

… then a real thrill: Tweedy and Jim James are introduce, and the band broke into the opening chords of “The Weight.” Time stood still! Bob started off the lyric very strong, then the group botched the chorus, but James and Tweedy each shined on their vocals and were clearly enjoying the moment, as was Dylan. Tweedy practically died and went to heaven on stage. Really quite a treat to see that.

“It was a funky record – it’s one of my favorite Beatle tracks, or, one of my favourite Lennon tracks, let’s say that. It’s funky, it’s bluesy, and I’m singing it pretty well. I like the sound of the record. You can dance to it. I’d buy it!”
~John Lennon (Playboy interview, 1980)

The Beatles recorded “Come Together” July 21, 1969.

We had a post here at JV yesterday: July 21: The Beatles recorded Come Together in 1969, and it got me thinking that there might be some great cover versions of this classic around..

We have to start with the original version (off course):

One comment over at our FB page suggested that Lennon’s live version from MSG, NYC in 1972 was even better than the original.. I tend to disagree, but it is a great version.

I can’t control the wind but I can adjust the sail.
~Ricky Skaggs

I hate negative songs; I won’t sing them. It doesn’t matter if it’s sold 2 million more albums.
~Ricky Skaggs

Ricky Skaggs has often said that he is “just trying to make a living” playing the music he loves. But it’s clear that his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively, distinctively American form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world. Ricky Skaggs is always forging ahead with cross-cultural, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations.
