March 8: Mississippi John Hurt was born in 1893

“The Blues ain’t nothin’ but a good woman on your mind.”
~Mississippi John Hurt

No blues singer ever presented a more gentle, genial image than Mississippi John Hurt. A guitarist with an extraordinarily lyrical and refined fingerpicking style, he also sang with a warmth unique in the field of blues, and the gospel influence in his music gave it a depth and reflective quality unusual in the field.

I hereby challenge all readers to put out their personal list of the 20 Greatest albums of all time.
Top 15 /10 is also appreciated.

Use the comments section in this post or check out our Facebook page.

The poll will be open till Tuesday’ish.

The rules:

  • ONLY 5 Bob Dylan albums allowed
  • It’s an album list, but 2 exceptions are allowed (Greatest Hits/Very Best/..)
This is meant to cover artists that didn’t really put out many “albums”, typically older music 40/50s.

Again: Don’t take theses lists so seriously ! It’s meant to be FUN.

——————–

It was a great poll to host, and we got lists in from 52 musicologists.

notes:

  • It’s nice to see (though hardly a surprise) 3 Dylan albums on top (as on my list)
  • lists with fewer than 5 did not count
  • Live albums did not count, including my own “Live @ San Quentin”, as stated above.. this will be a separate poll

Bob Dylan: Blonde On Blonde (released May 16, 1966) (read more)The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the Blonde on Blonde album. It’s that thin, that wild mercury sound. It’s metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up. That’s my particular sound.
~Bob Dylan (to Ron Rosenbaum – Nov 1977)

Beach Boys: Pet Sounds (May 16, 1966) (read more)[Pet Sounds] blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I’ve just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life…I figure no one is educated musically ’til they’ve heard that album…it may be going overboard to say it’s the classic of the century…but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways…I’ve often played Pet Sounds and cried. I played it to John [Lennon] so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence.
~Paul McCartney (recalling his first impressions of Pet Sounds)

The Who released “Live At Leeds” May 16, 1970  (read more)
Rolling Stone [Magazine] hailed it as the best ever live album, and they may still be right…

Jean “Django” Reinhardt; 23 January 1910 – 16 May 1953) was a pioneering virtuoso jazz guitarist and composer. Reinhardt is often regarded as one of the greatest guitar players of all time and is the first important European jazz musician who made major contributions to the development of the idiom. Using only the index and middle fingers of his left hand on his solos (his third and fourth fingers were paralyzed after an injury in a fire), Reinhardt invented an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique (sometimes called ‘hot’ jazz guitar) that has since become a living musical tradition within French gypsy culture. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, he co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, described by critic Thom Jurek as “one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz.” Reinhardt’s most popular compositions have become jazz standards, including “Minor Swing”, “Daphne”, “Belleville”, “Djangology”, “Swing ’42″, and “Nuages”.  Django Reinhardt2

UPDATED to include 22 lists from the comments section in this post.

The new votes caused some (minor) changes to the list. Most important: BIABH moved up to #4 & TOOM dropped to #5.

Saturday I asked the question – What are your five favorite Bob Dylan studio albums ? – over at our Facebook page. The response was great. As of writing 80 people (all Bob Dylan experts)  have uttered their opinions.
If you’re not on Facebook, or do not “like” our page.. you can use the comment section to post your 5 favorites. I will update this list at a later stage.
